Un grafico scaricabile per testare la risoluzione di un obiettivo e mettere a confronto diverse aperture della stessa lente o la stessa apertura di lenti diverse.

A downloadable custom-made resolution chart to test your lenses, comparing different apertures of the same lens or the same aperture of different lenses.

In commercio e su internet si trovano diversi grafici ISO per la misura della risoluzione di fotocamere digitali (ad esempio il grafico ISO 12233). Per comodità mi sono creato un grafico sulla base della risoluzione massima della mia Canon 6D. La risoluzione massima che il grafico è in grado di risolvere sulla verticale è di 3.650 linee. Se un obiettivo è in grado di raggiungere tale valore vuol dire che è veramente ottimo, ma non è così semplice e ovviamente saranno diverse le performance al centro ed ai bordi.

Il grafico può essere utilizzato per ricavare indicazioni in merito alla nitidezza o anche per verificare aberrazioni cromatiche e distorsioni.

L’ho realizzato per confrontare le mie lenti manuali, dato che online è difficile trovare siti che le abbiano testate, e può essere scaricato qui di seguito (lasciando almeno un “grazie!” tra i commenti).

Per usare il grafico bisogna stamparlo ad alta risoluzione. Per chi ha un plotter ho fatto una ‘versione completa’ in formato A0, che consente di testare l’obiettivo al centro e nei quattro angoli. Per chi ha pochi mezzi ho realizzato una ‘versione ritagliata’ in formato A4, che consente di testare l’obiettivo al centro ed in un angolo. Per usare questa versione bisogna stampare due volte il file in A4; per inquadrare comodamente in live view è possibile scaricare un cropmark che ho realizzato per Magic Lantern (inquadra il lato in alto a destra del centro dell’obiettivo e l’angolo in alto a destra). La ‘versione ritagliata’ è molto comoda per fare test veloci (se Magic Lantern è già installato sulla fotocamera).

Per eseguire i test bisogna impostare accuratamente lo scatto (cavalletto, autoscatto, ortogonalità, etc). Quindi basta scattare a diverse aperture, salvare le foto sempre nello stesso modo (ad esempio in formato RAW azzerando tutte le impostazioni e le correzioni che modificano lo stile dell’immagine) e confrontare tra loro gli scatti.

There are differents ISO Charts for measuring the resolution of electronic cameras (e.g., ISO 12233 Chart). What I have created is a variation that extends resolution to 3.650 lines widths per picture height (LW/PH), the maximum resolution of my Canon 6D. It’s a unit related to the max resolution of the camera’s image sensor, anyway it serves also as a good visual indicator of sharpness, chromatic aberration and distortion.

 I built it to test and compare my manual lenses and it can be downloaded (leaving at least a thanks!).

In principle, you should be able to finely print this chart. So I have realized a ‘complete chart’ (A0 paper size), that allows to test center and all corners of a lens, at the same time, and a ‘cropped chart ‘(A4 paper size, usable thanks to a cropmark created for Magic Lantern), that allows to test center and one corner of a lens (here you can download the cropmark that tests upper right center and the upper right corner). The ‘cropped chart’ is very useful to make quick tests!

Resolution’s tests on your camera require a perfect shot setup. Take pictures with differents apertures, save them always in the same way (e.g., RAW with neutral picture style or corrections turned off), and then compare them.
